Calling all Scrapers & Tooters!


Opportunities for amateur musicians

Do you play an orchestral instrument?
Perhaps you have a dusty old bassoon on top of your wardrobe that has been sadly neglected since your days in the school band. Why not get it down and come along for a pressure-free weekend of music making?

Scrapers & Tooters is a fantastic opportunity for amateur orchestral musicians to get together for a non-pressurised weekend of music-making.  You will rehearse as part of a full orchestra under a professional conductor and will receive sectional coaching from Scottish Chamber Orchestra musicians.

We're delighted to present to you a full range of Scrapers & Tooters events throughout the year with some fantastic conductors, and of course our wonderful SCO musicians. There are three S&T weekends listed below, one Wind Farm, the revival of Off the Peg, and a special weekend called Operantics in Perth:

S&T Operantics

Date:    19 & 20 January 2008

Venue:  Perth Horsecross

A combination of Scrapers & Tooters and Horsecross' successful Big Sing weekends, Operantics will bring amateur singers and instrumentalists together to work with SCO chorus master Mark Hindley. The final performance on the Sunday will include exciting choral repertoire, orchestral overtures, and professional soloists.

Wind Farm

An offshoot of the popular Scrapers & Tooters project, Wind Farm is a chance for more wind, brass and percussion players to get involved with music making!  Based on the S&T weekends, participants will rehearse as part of a large ensemble, and receive sectional coaching from SCO musicians.

There are places available for all wind, brass and percussion instruments, so if you've never been to one of our weekends before, now's your chance!

Off the Peg
Ensemble Techniques for String Players

Date:    January - May 2008
Venue: City Halls, Glasgow
Time:    1900 – 2200
Leader: Claire Sterling

SCO Principal 2nd Violin, Claire Sterling, will lead a series of 5 workshops, exploring the different techniques and skills involved with string ensemble music. Each workshop will focus on a different aspect of string playing. Sessions will also include input from external guest musicians.

The sessions will include:
  • Warm ups and posture awareness
  • String playing techniques
  • Explorations of string repertoire
  • An informal final concert

Specially designed as an extension of the Scrapers & Tooters programme, these workshops are ideally for players who are around grade 6 and above who would relish the opportunity to stretch themselves musically and develop their instrumental technique.

The sessions will take place on the following evenings:
January 23 • February 25 • March 25 • April 29 • May tbc
