Laboratory music project

Musicians explore new sound worlds with the Laboratory Music Project

a new way of making music

The lab is an experimental research project comprised of 8 virtuoso musicians from the SCO launched in autumn 2002 to create improvised and devised music away from the traditional concert platform. Each lab event involves an external musical collaborator, for example a school, a composer or an improvising musician, and culminates in a public performance or recording.

The lab musicians have worked with traditional musians from Kelso High School, Guitarist Paul Griffiths in Edinburgh and Stirling, electric cellist Frances-Marie Uitti and members of the Tolbooth Sound Orchestra.

2007/2008

The Laboratory Music Project is currently working with Indian music specialist David Murphy, cellist Matthew Barley and internationally renowned sarod player, Amjad Ali Khan.

November 2007
The Lab players are involved with a composition workshop led by world-renowned English composer Mark-Anthony Turnage.

The SCO and Glasgow's Concert Halls are collaborating to provide an opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate composers based in Scotland to write a piece for the Lab group, and the bass soloist John Patitucci. 6 works will feature in the composition workshop on Friday 16th November 2007. This project runs alongside the UK premiere of Turnage’s new double bass concerto with the SCO at Glasgow City Halls on Friday 16 November 2007.

2006/2007

In the first half of 2006 the Lab musicians have worked with two external music collaborators: David Murphy and Pete Vilk.

Scottish Widows
The Lab was recently involved in a drumming and orchestral instrument project with Scottish Widows and Arts & Business. Pete Vilk and Mat Clements led sessions alongside the SCO players, working with Scottish Widows employees. Participants learnt about African, Cuban and Brazilian drumming traditions, and performed alongside Lab members at a concert held at Scottish Widows' Edinburgh Headquarters. Archive Project: Rencontre

As part of the year-long programme of events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale, renowned French composer and jazz bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons worked with seven virtuoso SCO musicians and his trio to create a new piece entitled Rencontre. Journeying through diverse music traditions including flamenco, afro-latin, central European and oriental, Rencontre fused elements of the classical tradition with improvisation.

Recontre was performed by the combined forces of the SCO laboratory music project and the Renaud Garcia Fons trio in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dijon and Boulougne in autumn 2004.
