The Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Chorus will be joined by a line-up of prestigious soloists for Haydn’s Harmoniemesse and Beethoven’s Symphony No 5 in Glasgow City Halls on Friday 12 October and Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall on Saturday 13 October. Conductor Thierry Fischer leads the ensemble, which includes soloists tenor James Gilchrist and bass baritone Stephan Loges.
Both works in the programme were written at the start of the nineteenth century; Haydn’s in 1802 and Beethoven’s in 1808. The Orchestra opens the concert with Beethoven’s Symphony No 5, with its famous opening motif. The second half of the programme sees the Chorus and soloists join the Orchestra on stage for Haydn’s last large-scale work, the Harmoniemesse. The word ‘harmonie’ in the title, meaning ‘wind band’ in German, is a reference to the central role given to woodwind, horns and trumpets in the piece.
Thierry Fischer – a regular guest conductor with the SCO – last conducted the Orchestra in March 2007 in a performance of Berg and Schubert. In addition to the concerts on 12 and 13 October, Fischer also conducts the opening concert in the Orchestra’s new drive-time series, CL@SIX, at 6pm in St Cuthbert’s Parish Church on Tuesday 9 October.
The soloists in the concert are tenor James Gilchrist, soprano Joanne Lunn, mezzo soprano Tove Dahlberg and bass-baritone Stephan Loges.
The SCO Chorus has had a busy summer in both the concert hall and recording studio, performing Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso in the Edinburgh International Festival, and recording Edward Harper’s Symphony No 2 with the Orchestra for Delphian records.
