Venue change for two SCO concerts in Season 2008/09

Venue change for two SCO concerts in Season 2008/09

  • Concerts moved from Usher Hall to accommodate building work
  • Tickets for SCO Season 2008/09 concerts go on sale today

In order to enable necessary building work to progress most effectively at the Usher Hall, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra has moved two concerts in its 2008/09 Season to alternative venues.

The Orchestra’s performance of Mendelssohn’s great choral masterpiece Elijah on 29 January 2009 will now be performed at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre.  Conducted by the young Canadian Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who is forging a phenomenal career on both sides of the Atlantic, Elijahfeatures an outstanding cast of soloists and the award-winning SCO Chorus.

The concert on 12 March, conducted by Louis Langrée, and featuring Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and Grammy Award-winner James Ehnes performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, will now be presented at the Queen’s Hall.

The SCO will return to the Usher Hall for the Closing Concert of its 2008/09 Season – a performance of Haydn’s The Seasons, conducted by SCO Principal Guest Conductor Olari Elts – on 14 May 2009.

Tickets for all SCO concerts in its 2008/09 Seasons in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and St Andrews go on sale today (Monday 9 June).

The building work at the Usher Hall will improve the facilities in the Hall by providing a new glass wing which will house a café/bar, box office and hospitality areas; a dedicated education space; enhanced protection of the Hall’s acoustics and improvements to access and circulation, including new staircases and public lifts.  The works have encountered delays following the discovery of unexpected deficiencies in the fabric of the building leading to time-consuming changes to plans and additional investigatory work.

Roy McEwan, Managing Director of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, said:

"Through our close communication with the City Council we have come to appreciate the technical challenges which have to be resolved as the refurbishment progresses. In the end, the displacement being caused by this work will be justified by the fine facility which we will all be able to enjoy, performers and audiences alike, in the future. We are particularly pleased that we are able to relocate our concerts and ensure that our Edinburgh audiences will be able to enjoy a full SCO season. We are receiving very helpful support from the City Council to make this possible.”
