The Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus has built a reputation as one of Scotland’s finest and most versatile choirs. It is the SCO’s resident chorus, working regularly with conductors including Conductor Laureate Sir Charles Mackerras, Conductor Emeritus Joseph Swensen, Frans Brüggen, Nicholas McGegan, Emmanuelle Haïm and Kenneth Montgomery.
Recent concerts have included repertoire as diverse as Purcell’s Birthday Ode for Queen Mary Come ye Sons of Art, Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day and the rarely-performed Athalia, Haydn’s The Creation and, in November 2006, the premiere of Edward Harper’s Symphony No 2. The Chorus performs regularly in Scotland’s major cities and has toured to London (Beethoven’s Fidelio) and Barcelona (Handel’s Messiah). In 2006 it gave an acclaimed a capella concert of Rachmaninov’s Vespers at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
Recordings include Mozart’s Requiem with Sir Charles Mackerras (on the SCO/Linn record label), Mozart’s Il Seraglio with Mackerras (Telarc), Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (Deutsche Grammophon), Bellini’s I Capuleti ed i Montecchi with Donald Runnicles (Teldec) and Rossini’s Zelmira with Maurizio Benini (Opera Rara). In August 2007, the Chorus and Orchestra recorded Edward Harper’s Symphony No 2 for Delphian.
A regular visitor to the Edinburgh International Festival, the Chorus has performed in a wide variety of events including a ballet production of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It won one of The Herald’s coveted Angel awards in 2001 for Handel’s Messiah with Sir Charles Mackerras. In 2005, the Chorus took part in two outstanding opera performances: Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito with Sir Charles Mackerras and Rossini’s Adelaide de Bourgogne with Guiliano Carella, which was recorded live for Opera Rara. During the 2007 Festival, the Chorus performed Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso with Jean-Christophe Spinosi and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Nicholas McGegan to critical acclaim.
